LO STAGNONE
The Oriented Natural Reserve of Lo Stagnone, in the Western Sicily, is located halfway between Marsala and Trapani; it presents extraordinary naturalistic scenarios such as the salt ponds (still active for the salt production), suggestive windmills, biodiversity of flora and fauna, vineyards, pink flamingos and herons that overfly the lagoon.
It extends for over 20km2, opening to the sea in two points: the northern "mouth" in San Teodoro and the southern "mouth" towards the Contrada Spagnola (near the city of Marsala).
The waters of the lagoon are shallow, generally characterized by a flat surface and, together with the favorable weather conditions all year round, with mild temperatures and constant winds during all seasons, make it an ideal location both for those who want to learn and practice Kitesurfing and for advanced kiters, already experienced in freestyle.
The Mistral wind blowing from the north (N, NE, NW) is the prevailing wind at Lo Stagnone, with an average of 15-25 knots from early spring till late autumn. There are also frequent days of Scirocco or Libeccio winds from the south, with an intensity that can exceed 40 knots! In addition to these two opposing wind systems, at Lo Stagnone it is also possible to benefit from thermal winds, generated by the contrast between the overheating of the low waters and the surrounding open sea temperature.
The Stagnone Lagoon (meaning "Big pond" in Italian) has thus become one of the most famous kitesurf destinations in Italy and in the world, a spot sought after by many national and international kiters, that can enjoy an average of about 300 windy days per year. Other than this, you will have the good fortune to kite and train some newr stunts inside a unique Nature Reserve, protected between the four islands of Mozia, Isola Grande or Lunga, Schola, and Santa Maria, also enjoying some spectacular sunsets over the Egadi Island in the background (Favignana, Levanzo Marettimo).
Sicily Kite Academy, is positioned in the heart
of this unique scenario, making available for you:
(1) A large parking space to accommodate many Kites in complete safety;
(2) Separate areas for teaching and freeride;
(3) An equipped relaxation area and a private area for taking-off;
(4) Constant assistance to make you navigate the lagoon with all wind conditions and directions.
