Marsala, located on the western tip of Sicily in the context of Mediterranean civilization, represents an essential starting point. Myths and legends, heroes, peoples, great philosophers, artists, writers have ventured into these lands. Phoenicians and Arabs were among the protagonists of its long history: the former left a former colony on an enchanting island, while the latter gave the city its name. The arrival of the Englishman John Woodhouse was instead responsible for the invention of Marsala wine, but it was an all-Italian family that made it famous throughout the world for which, since 1987, it has become the City of Wine. Also famous for the landing of Garibaldi and the Thousand, it represents a city full of vicissitudes that make it fascinating and lively.
Our Tips:
Here are the main tourist destinations of the city:
• Historic center, the heart of the city: Today if you go to Piazza della Repubblica you will have the opportunity to admire two of the four remaining gates: Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova. From there you can start the path to visit the beauties of the historic center: the Duomo, the Piazzetta Purgatorio and the church of the Purgatory. Continuing your journey you will find the archaeological finds of the old Lilybeo, the Flemish Tapestry Museum, the Palazzo and the Municipal Art Gallery and finally the market. The Ancient Market during the day hosts fishermen who sell their freshly caught fish products.
• Visit the archaeological area of Capo Boeo of the Roman imperial age, which rises above a source of fresh water: Grotta della Sibilla Lilibetana; this ancient place of worship, inspired by the adoration of water, becomes a baptismal font and, identified as the home of the Sicilian Sibyl, a place of pilgrimage and prophecies.
• Visit the wineries (Cantine Florio and Cantine Pellegrino)
• Take a walk on the Lungomare Boeo and visit the beaches around the city (Lido Signorino)
•Do not miss the typical dishes of the traditional Marsala restaurant: Cous Cous with fish, pasta with sea urchins (you can't find it on the menu, you have to ask for it), baked pasta, sandwich with panelle, pane cunzato, rianata, and arancine, brioscia with ice cream, lemon granita and Sicilian cassata for dessert.

The island of Mothia, an ancient Phoenician colony on the island of San Pantaleo in the Stagnone di Marsala Nature Reserve, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Access to the island is allowed by two private jetties, which connect Mozia to the mainland. Very important testimonies remain of the glorious past history: the submerged Punic road used up to the 1960s by Marsala peasants who from the mainland reached the island with carts for the harvest; the tophet, the sacred area for human sacrifices where it is still possible to see the urns; the necropolis, but above all the very elegant statue of the Giovinetto, the jewel of the Mozia museum.
In the 11th century it was donated by the Normans to the Basilian monks of Palermo who renamed it the island of San Pantaleo. From here begin the beautiful Ettore-Infersa Salt Pans, closely related to the cultural history of Sicily and the civilizations of the Mediterranean. In this path you can admire the renovated mills and also the wonderful colors of the salt basins. The salt museum, in the Nubia district, collects and preserves the ancient work tools of the salt workers and many old black and white photos, evidence of a work that over the times has also adapted to new technologies.
Our Tips:
• Visiting the island of Mothia and the Whitaker museum is possible in one day, thanks to the Saline Infersa (Mozia Line) landing stage, which makes the round trip crossing to the island of Mothia and the panoramic excursion of the entire lagoon of the Stagnone.
• Duration of daily excursion: from 2 to 4 hours;
• Upon returning from the excursion, do not miss the aperitif at sunset at the Mamma Caura Bar. Duration of the excursion and museum visit: from 2 to 4 hours.
